Because if they are not, we are screwed as a first world nation.
No, I don't think they will be better at it. And I do think we may be screwed as a first world nation. Actually I think the whole world might be screwed as far as that goes.
I suspect what did us in was the "sin of Edom" a prideful belief that it can't happen to us.
